The adventure game Nihilumbra features a difficult and easily solved puzzle system. Along the way, you will gain access to many different abilities. These can range from jumping over rocky hills to avoid pits or streams of traffic , through swarms of dark demons that want to consume you, to long stretches of road. My personal attachment to the game's artwork stems from its haunting nature. The way the plot weaves together and the melancholy tone of the voice combine to create a melancholic atmosphere. When lost in my own world of confusion, confusion over my identity, and obsession with this emotion, I come off as pitiful. With the background music provided by talented composer Álvaro Lafuente, I don’t require any additional music. The game’s guitar solos, voice reverberations and character footsteps echo through Lafuente’s compositions. When playing the game, I often recall sad stories I have experienced and develop a sense of sympathy for the game’s protagonist. All creatures wonder about themselves and their surroundings, but this black creature feels especially lonely. Some consider this transformation to be small and indefinite.

In Nihilumbra, the metaphor of becoming a scarecrow appeals to me. It represents how people hope to fit into life, and how they need to be accepted by others. When acting as a scarecrow, appear to be clueless about everything around you. This will cause you to mimic the surrounding environment and grow up. Alternatively, when living in darkness, your life can end up the same way as death if you neglect everything. Once you decide to fight back, your individuality will return.
